The Prostějov challenger has an unexpected champion once again: the third-seeded Pablo Andujar of Spain (No. 93rd in ATP) defeated the thirty-year old Attila Balazs of Hungary (No. 222nd in ATP) in the final and became the second Spanish champion of the challenger. He built on the last triumph of his native Jaume Munar who was the first Spaniard to win the Prostějov tournament in its history. The third-seeded Andújar who ranks No. 93 in ATP ranking won the fifth title in his career and the first one this year. He won all his titles on clay.

“The twenty-sixth edition is over and if we look around there aren’t many tournaments with such a tradition. I’m glad that my wife did great as the tournament director. I also appreciate that we have a reliable partner who is interested in the development of our tournament so that it would retain its position among the best challengers in our country as well as abroad. Let alone they really like tennis.

“We’re satisfied with the tournament. I’d like to thank to Petra Černošková and her team for perfect organization. We know that the organization of such tournaments is harder and more difficult every year and we appreciate that the tournament ranks among the best ones,” said Jan Müller, marketing communication manager of MONETA Money Bank.

“We did a great job despite all changes to challengers introduced by ITF and ATP. We were surprised a little at the beginning but I think we can be satisfied. It seemed at times that even the ATP supervisor didn’t know for sure who was going to qualify for the main event. However, none of the novelties affected our tournament. We even managed the increase the field to 48 players without a problem even though we had to organize more matches.

Even though Radek Štěpánek has already held a perfect farewell ceremony in O2 Arena, what he experienced on the centre court in Prostějov must have been even more emotional for him. It was Prostějov where he actually started his career! The Minister of Education, Youth and Sport Robert Plaga, the mayor of Prostějov František Jura and Miroslav Černošek came to thank him. Who gave joy at the Center Court?

MONETA Czech Open 2019 will not have a Czech champion. I became clear after the doubles final in which Jiří Lehečka and Jiří Veselý lost to Philipp Oswald and Filip Polášek 4:6, 6:7(4). The Austrian-Slovak couple were favorites. They never lost their serve in the match and, in the second set, Lehečka and Veselý did not manage to put their opponents under pressure and did not generate any break points. The eleven-times ATP titles champions were better and built on their this year’s triumphs in Lisbon and Rome.

The third seeded Pablo Andujar of Spain stopped the top seeded Casper Ruud on his way to the final. The Norwegian had a chance to turn the match in the second set at 2:3: he had three advantages but he failed to level. Andujar increased his lead to 4:2 and then to 5:3. The Norwegian reduced the score to 4:5 but the Spaniard did let his chance go by.
