The Ukrainian player, who has lived here for twenty years, played one of the best matches of his career. At the end of the match, he caught up after losing a break and celebrated a surprising victory.
"I don’t really know what to think right now. I have to get my head straight. I just tried to fight until the last ball, and it paid off. I managed to beat the 19th player in the world – that’s my biggest victory. That’s all I can think about right now," said Sachko immediately after winning the match point.
The tournament favourite had a poor start, quickly falling behind 0–4 and losing the first set. He improved significantly in the second set and earned a chance to play a deciding set. At 5-4, Menšík even served for the match, but he made two double faults in the crucial game and was unable to find the rhythm he needed. "After the ninth game, Jakub got nervous. His serve wasn’t working, and in the next rally I hit the net, which meant another point. Sometimes it just happens like that. I played well, but I also had a bit of luck," admitted the winner of the match.
