Jiri Vesely comfortably wins the UniCredit Czech Open

07.06.2014 13:11:38 | Jiri Vesely closed his participation in the Prostejov challenger by an overwhelming victory over Slovak Norbertem Gombos 6:2, 6:2 in the finals. The match took only 74 minutes and it did not develop in favour of Gombos for a single moment. Vesely was patient, more active, had a better serve. After Radek Stepanek, Jan Hajek, and Bohdan Ulihrach, Jiri Vesely became the fourth Czech player who won the title in the Hana Region.

Vesely reached the last year’s finals in which he was defeated by Stepanek. This time, he ousted the top-seeded Stepanek in the semifinals on Friday. In both sets,  Vesely broke the opponent’s serve in the opening games which was the key to his victory. The twenty-three year old Slovak Gombos, who occupies the 166th position in the ATP rankings, surprisingly ousted the second-seeded Dutch Robin Haase. It paved the way for him to the final matches. He beat Adam Pavlasek in the semis. On his successful way through the tournament, Gombos benefited in particular from his hard and aggressive game. However, such strong weapon was perfectly eliminated by Vesely in the finals. He did not let him play aggressive rallies. He gradually got him out of the shooting rhythm by his diverse game. Vesely closed the first set with two aces. In the second set, Vesely was leading 4:0. Even though Gombos changed the score a little at the end, Vesely concentrated on his game. He did not allow any turnaround and converted the first set point on his serve into victory. “I’m really happy to have won this great tournament. Let alone I won it in my domestic club. I’d like to thank everybody who helped me achieve this.“
