Jiri Vesely: “I expected a harder match“

07.06.2014 14:04:20 | The decisive match of the 21st edition of the UniCredit Czech Open offered a Czech and Slovak tennis derby. Jiri Vesely, who occupied a higher position in the ranking, was a clear leader in the match. Norbert Gombos lost his serve right at the beginning and the Prostejov player kept his opponent under pressure for a long time. He almost did not give him any chance. He broke Norbert’s serve in the seventh game and, immediately afterwards, won the first set.

“The beginning helped me very much. Norbert lost his serve and I always managed to save mine despite minor problems. The opponent was down and I took advantage of it,“ said Vesely. He was already leading 4:0 in the second set and everything was leading to his victorious gesture. Vesely won the finals in Prostejov twice 6:2 and gained 125 points in the ATP ranking. He earned EUR 15 300. “Honestly, I expected a harder match. The opponent did not play very well today. But it doesn’t mean I will celebrate less. I’m very happy about the victory,“ Vesely said.
Vesely converted the very first match point on his serve into his victory. “I played quality matches from the quarterfinals in which I remained physically and mentally stable. It’s always harder when you play at home. On one hand, there is a great support from the crowd, but on the other, you’re under pressure and there are greater expectations,“ Vesely said.
