Veselý wins his tenth title

06.06.2015 14:10:25 | Veselý has defended the last year’s title at the Prostějov Challenger. He met Laslo Djere of Serbia in the final and defeated him in two sets. Veselý was the seed No. 2 in the tournament and he justified his role of the favourite. Djere lost his serve early in the first set which determined the course of the match. The Serbian could have levelled up in the fourth game of the first set when he had two break points. However, Veselý managed to hold his serve and took the lead at 3:1. He held the lead until the end of the first set which he won 6:4. The course of the second set was very similar. Why did Veselý win? He played more consistently and patiently and gave a more experienced performance. It has been the tenth title for Czech tennis in the twenty-two year history of the tournament in Prostějov!

“The match might have seemed easy but it wasn’t at all. I knew Djere would be a bit more nervous, but his defence was really great. He moved well and covered the court perfectly. What was decisive was that I could rely on my service which also helped me to save his break points. I was more active but yet still quite nervous. Believe it or not I’m glad the match is over. I kept thinking I should defend the last year’s title. But the more I was thinking about it, the more difficult and complicated it seemed to be,“ said the happy champion after the match. “I’m really very happy to have won the tournament. It’s always great to succeed at home before the local crowd and friends.“ The route through the tournament cost Veselý a lot of energy. He withdrew from the tournament in Stuttgart for physical exhaustion. “The last week has been very tiring. I did not play with ease and could not find my rhythm. I’m going to practice on a fast surface or on artificial grass next week. I’m going to play in Halle, then Nottingham and Wimbledon,“ said Veselý about his future plans.

The 22nd UniCredit Czech Open closed with the awards ceremony. “It was a week of great tennis. As the tournament’s titular partner, we are really satisfied and I would like to thank to all who made it a success.“ said Jiří Kunert, the general manager of UniCredit Bank on the Centre Court.
