Veselý’s Advancement Interrupted by Heavy Rain

01.06.2016 20:21:51 | Jiří Veselý made it through to the quarter-final as the second Czech. He defeated Tipsarevič of Serbia, the former world No. 8. “I made the match quite dramatic myself. It was up and down today. I played some great shots, but then I made unbelievable errors and showed rather average performance." What was important for the development of the match?

“It was important that I managed to play great balls at right moments. Moreover, my serve always helped me and opened the gate to the next round for me,“ said Jiří Veselý after the match. Rain clouds rolled in Prostějov during the match and it was just a matter of time when it would start raining on the National Tennis Court in Moravia. The match was interrupted at 7:6(5), 4:2 and 40:15 and the roof over the Centre Court had to be closed. However, a few drops fell down on the court anyway. They resumed to play a little later and Veselý finally won the match.

What did he hate about Tipsarevič’s game? “He plays very clever tennis. He thinks about it a lot and takes good use of the court. He perfectly places his shots one after another and he knows exactly what is going to happen. On the other hand, he made many easy errors in the match, which was probably caused by a long break due to his heel injury. He would clearly need practise in matches.“

Who did the interruption help?
“It surely helped him. I was badly beating him before the match was interrupted. He also complained he couldn’t hear the sound of the ball due to the rain. I didn’t need any break, I wanted to keep playing.“

Who will Veselý meet in the quarter-final? Kukushkin of Kazakhstan who defeated Giannessi of Italy in the second round.
