UniCredit Czech Open: Kopřiva Becomes the First Czech Quarter-Finalist

01.06.2022 15:53:42 | After defeating Pablo Andujar of Spain 6:1, 7:6(4) in less than two hours, Vít Kopřiva reached the quarter-finals of the Prostějov Challenger. The Czech player dominated the first set with great ease and allowed his opponent only one game. However, the second set was much more complicated. The Spaniard was leading 5:1 at one point and it seemed the match would go to the third deciding set.

However, Kopřiva refused to give up: he broke his opponent's serve twice and turned the set around to 6:5. Andujar at least took the set to a tiebreak, but it was eventually the Czech player who rejoiced. "I had nothing to lose at 1:5, so I tried to get a rhythm for the upcoming third set. A few good rallies got me back in the match and as soon as I got a chance to turn the set around, I took it," said Kopriva who hit the ball really hard and forced the Spaniard make mistakes. "Especially the end was very tight, but Andujar’s double faults helped me a great deal. Every victory over a top 100 player is worth a lot even though it takes a lot of strength," said Kopřiva.
What did he have to say about the match? "It really was a tough match. The first set was better on my part than expected. However, I was trailing in the second set. Pablo hardly made any mistakes, played several winners and proved that he belongs in the top 100. I tried to get back into the match as much as possible in order to get ready for the possible third set. He helped me a lot with his double faults. The tiebreak was just about one or two balls. I'm very happy I managed to turn the match around already in the second set."
Kopřiva wrapped up the match with a perfect winning gesture.
